Its not about the destination, its about the journey...
The Free State province is rarely explored by mountain bikers from outside the province, as it mainly serves as a stop and go or a quick visit to family when passing through to the mountains on the other side. We decided to tackle the Xhariep region as this is where most of the unexplored routes are found. The desire to ride from Dam to Dam has always been an exciting yet daunting thought, until we decided to man up and just do it. We created the Trans Xhariep experience as it will prove to be one of the toughest races in the Free State Province, as well as one of the most rewarding accomplishments you will ever try to achieve.
Starting in the town of Gariep dam, cyclist will be treated to a great atmosphere and race village, with a great variety of accommodation options available to pick and choose from. Gariep dam being very central for most, proved to be the key factor when trying to accommodate riders from all over the country. With the official race briefing and race registration the night before the start, riders can look forward to a great time and a good rest before setting off on a journey of a lifetime.
Taking on the full Ultra distance will not be an easy task. Racing in teams of two will keep it interesting yet safe when one or both riders hits the proverbial wall. With 165km lying between riders and the "half way" mark in Vanderkloof Dam, Riders will have to pace themselves very carefully not to run out of steam too early. With the first half being predominantly down hill as the river flows riders can expect a tough race back to Gariep dam to complete the 310km route.
145km lies between riders and their final destination. Starting in Vanderkloof Dam participants can look forward to a fantastic journey back to Gariep dam while trying to stay ahead of the teams racing in the Ultra. Riding in a solo category we would expect large groups of riders taking on the lite just to test the water before taking on the big daddy Ultra in coming years.
Enjoy the ride Collect memories, not things
Crank it up smile and wave...
When entering the small town of Gariep dam, you will make your way to the race registration, goody bag collection, race apparel and checkpoint crates will be handed to teams and solo riders. Riders, managers, friends and family can sit down for a proper pasta meal and some great music while planning and talking about the journey ahead.
Expect some mixed emotions while deciding what you would like to put in those crates, every team has a different strategy. Be sure to hand in your crates before you leave. 21:00 is the crates cut off. Remember your lights...
Saturday morning it's all systems go. With more than enough accommodation in Gariep dam, you don't even have to load the bikes, just roll to the start line. Note to self, have a good breakfast, this might be a long day.
Check your snacks, make sure your bottles are filled and you have your race tag ready to go...
If your taking on the "Lite"make sure to get an early start and make your way to Vanderkloof dam where the event Crew will be setting up the midway Checkpoint/Start of the Lite category. Are you excited yet?
As soon as the gun goes of, the fun starts, buckle up and enjoy the ride, Smile for the cameras on route and capture the moments.
